Dear Colleague, We are pleased to invite to you to attend the 10th anniversary meeting of the World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer to be held in Barcelona, Spain 25 to 28 June 2008. Over the last 10 years, more than 12,000 attendees from 98 countries have attended this Congress, and we are excited to see the growth in scope and participation every year. The Congress has grown into an event that encompasses malignancies affecting every component of the gastrointestinal tract and aspects related to the care of all gastrointestinal cancer patients, including screening, diagnosis and the latest management options for common and uncommon tumors. We have much to celebrate from the past years. The number of deaths from colorectal cancer has been dropping. Polyps are being found by screening and removed before they can develop into cancers. Screening is also allowing more colorectal cancers to be found earlier when the disease is easier to cure. In addition, treatment for colorectal cancer has improved over the last 10 years, allowing for more effective options for people with this diagnosis. However,
there is still much work to be done. The incidence
of gastrointestinal cancers is staggering. According to The
International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of
the World Health Organization, worldwide more than 1,000,000
men and women are diagnosed annually with colon and rectal
cancer. Oesophageal cancer (462,117), pancreatic (232,306)
and liver cancers (626,162) affect hundreds of thousands more.
In Europe alone, cancers of the colon and rectum are the second
most diagnosed cancer with 412,900 new cases in 2006, making
it the second most common cause of cancer death in both men The World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer continues to serve as a multidisciplinary forum of leading practitioners including oncologists, gastroenterologists, surgeons, radiotherapists, specialists in cancer research as well as oncology nurses to review the state of the art and share the newest information on the management of gastrointestinal cancer. Patients’ advocacy groups are also becoming more and more interested in the Congress. Presentation of cutting-edge research has become one of the highlights of the World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer, offering opportunities for researchers to interact with colleagues and share their endeavors with the healthcare community. In 2007, more than 400 abstracts were accepted for presentation and publication in a special supplement to the Annals of Oncology. The ESMO International Symposium: 10th World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer promises to continue the tradition of excellence and stimulate the interest of its participants.
